Richard Oastler

This Wetherspoon pub is an interesting conversion of a Methodist chapel built in 1878. In Autumn 2014 the pub was extended into a later chapel annex not previously occupied by the pub. This room is available for private functions. The main bar area is lit by two chandeliers hanging from an intriguingly decorated ceiling. Organ pipes, pews and even hymn book numbers can still be seen on the upper floor which is not open to the public.

Surprisingly nice interior, which was originally a Church. High ceiling, look up to see the Church organ pipes and pews. Unlimited refills available on hot drinks. Constant ale and beer variations available, particularly during regular events. Staff are cheery and quick to serve and great table service. Outside seating available during the summer. Food prices are great!

Wetherspoons. It is what it is. Predictable menu wherever you go. Fabulous building and interior though. Lovely young man who served us. Pleasant and patient given that it was absolutely rammed on a Friday lunchtime. Good choice for a meal at a decent meal at a fair price.

Visited for a breakfast before setting off for a weekend away. Poor start to the weekend, thankfully the weekend did get better from there. The large breakfast was just about ok, despite the long wait. The pancakes and bacon were dreadful. Does the chef not want to be a chef? Would have sent them back but was out of time. As always with Weatherspoons, the drinks are great, a large selection at great prices. The pub itself is great, always clean, and a good atmosphere.

  4. Mollie Keetley says:

The food was good value for money, and I liked the convenience of ordering from the table. However, the service was disappointing. My partner and I ordered hot chocolates, but were told the machine was broken. That’s understandable, but instead of an apology or refund, I was given chocolate dusting powder and told to make the drinks with that. If the machine isn’t working, the drinks shouldn’t be offered. Staff seemed irritated to deal with us, which brought the mood down. Table ordering is great, but it shouldn’t replace good, face-to-face customer service.

Call in weekday evenings, become a bit of a regular and needles to say the staff are great. There hard workers and have to deal with some (off) people however they always try there best. The lasses can have a laugh and Ethan has become more familiar and always has a polite word to say. All in all we keep coming back again and again. Beautiful little spot and if you prefer it quieter wait till after 9.30 on a weekend all the idols that are out for cheap drinks run off to the Calder. Big shout out to the evening staff during the week though and oh one lovely lady who was covering one day who cycles to work listening to Deff Leopard (Bravo to you)
